Replacing Stolen or Damaged Furniture

Thu, 12 Mar 2009

It can be awful to get home and realise that your home has been damaged or to find that you have lost several of your favourite pieces of furniture. If people have stolen your furniture it can be downright violating and if environmental conditions, such as fire damage or bad plumbing are to blame it can be frustrating and completely infuriating. There is a route to feeling better and getting messes like these fixed though.

You`ll need to contact your insurance company and create lists of what was lost in the fire, flood or burglary. So, the first stage is having a good insurer there to contact. If you haven`t been paying insurance bills or haven`t been keeping your insurer up-to-date on the contents of your home, complications could add to the stress of the situation. However, if you can contact your insurer easily and know what it is that you`ve lost; things will run far more smoothly for you.

Quality Furniture

These days having quality furniture in your home is essential, it is resilient, long lasting and it can survive being climbed on by children without falling to pieces or doing them harm. Most of us love pieces of furniture which are sturdy and attractive, but how many of us make sure that they`re safe in the event of a disaster?

If you shop at a store such as South Sea Trading, you do so thinking that the beautiful pieces of furniture you buy will be in your family`s homes for years to come. They can be passed down through the generations, to your grandchildren and from them to theirs. So, dealing with losing these items due to insufficient home insurance could be a nightmare.

Usually when you make an insurance claim the insurer will only provide like-for-like products. So, it stands to reason that the nicer the furniture you lose, the nicer the furniture you will be able to replace it with. According to one insurance expert: "Thousands of home owners forget to declare precious home furnishings to their home insurance companies every year and then when disaster does strike, they have trouble proving the value of the items they have lost."

Having the correct insurance to cover the furnishings in your home is the only way to comfortably deal with replacing them if they are burned, stolen or suffer from flood damage.

Making a Claim

If your home and the furniture inside it have recently been stolen or damaged and you are now looking in to making a claim, relax. Here are some simple tips for aiding the claims process. Follow these and your claim will be processed quite quickly.

When you file a home insurance claim you`ll need to know what is included in your policy. For example, houses and apartments which are not near a large mass of water such as a river, beach or canal rarely have flood damage included in the cover, despite the fact that burst pipes cause floods too. Once you know if you`re eligible to claim you can begin the process.

When you list items which you`ve lost get an inventory checklist from a website that lists typical items so that you don`t forget any of your possessions. If possibly, walk through your home and think about where you stored your belongings. Also write things under subheadings for ease of understanding, such as: Kitchen Equipment, Jewellery or Large Furniture. That way you`re much less likely to forget anything important and your home insurance company can read these lists quicker; speeding up the claims proces
